Introduction

The aim of pharmacological treatment is to improve the physical, psychological and social state of the patient. This requires a modification of alcohol consumption, leading to abstinence by alcohol-dependent subjects. Pharmacological treatment depends on:

  • aversive products, aimed at reducing relapse,
  • medications specially indicated for the treatment of dependence,
  • treatment of associated emotional problems.
